Forward Deployed Engineer Pay by City in 2026: What the Data Actually Shows

Forward Deployed Engineer Pay by City in 2026: What the Data Actually Shows
E-E-A-T: This guide is based on published compensation data from FDE Pulse, FDE Jobs, FDE Engineers and Recruiting from Scratch, fetched 2026-10-30. We did not run any salary survey ourselves.
Forward deployed engineer (FDE) roles have spread across AI companies, and so have questions about what they pay. The problem: city-level FDE salary data in 2026 is thin, contradictory, and mostly anecdotal. This article walks through what the published data shows, where it conflicts, and how to use it when you negotiate. For the mechanics of the negotiation itself, see our 2026 tech salary negotiation guide.
What is an FDE and why the pay data is different
FDE pay does not follow standard software engineer pay patterns because the role is concentrated in a handful of employer types: Palantir, frontier AI labs, applied-AI startups, and enterprise AI teams at large companies. Each tier structures compensation differently, so a single city average hides more than it reveals about what you will be offered.
An FDE is an engineer embedded directly with customers to deploy and build products in production, rather than working on internal codebases. Because the role exists mostly at AI-native employers, pay tracks those companies’ compensation philosophies, which range from Palantir’s modest-base structure to frontier labs’ equity-heavy packages. That is why this article spends as much time on employer type as on geography.
The headline numbers: three medians, three answers
Median US FDE base salary lands between $173K and $190K in 2026, depending on the source. FDE Jobs reports roughly $173K across 106 live postings that disclose pay, FDE Pulse reports $186K from 159 disclosed postings, and Recruiting from Scratch, a recruiting firm, reports $190K from 135 postings.
| Source | Median base | Sample | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| FDE Pulse | $186K | 159 of 1,046 active postings | Range $20K–$489K; 15% disclosure rate |
| FDE Jobs | ~$173K | 106 live disclosing postings | Average advertised range $176K–$240K |
| Recruiting from Scratch | $190K | 135 postings | 25th pct $160K, 75th pct $220K; vendor-sourced |
These are all-level medians, not mid-level figures. The spread comes from sample composition, methodology, and how each source handles postings versus estimates. Treat roughly $170K–$190K as the all-level base range in 2026, not as a verdict.
FDE pay by city: the only real table
City-level FDE pay with sample sizes exists in exactly one fetched source: FDE Pulse, with data as of 2026-04-30 (about six months old at publication). New York is the only city with a usable sample at $195K median across 51 postings. San Francisco shows a higher median at $210K, but on 15 postings. Every other city rests on five or fewer.
| City | Median base | Sample size (n) | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| New York | $195K (avg range $168K–$238K) | 51 | Citable |
| San Francisco | $210K (avg range $192K–$274K) | 15 | Citable, weaker sample |
| Washington DC | $198K (avg range $140K–$233K) | 5 | Directional only |
| Austin | $202K (avg range $113K–$254K) | 3 | Anecdotal |
| Seattle | $190K (avg range $160K–$231K) | 5 | Directional only |
| Chicago | $174K (avg range $141K–$198K) | 5 | Directional only |
| Boston | $170K (avg range $144K–$199K) | 5 | Directional only |
| Los Angeles | $163K (avg range $139K–$188K) | 1 | Anecdotal |
| Remote (US) | $175K | 50 | See remote section |
Source: FDE Pulse, data as of 2026-04-30. Base salary only; equity and bonus excluded. Our rule: only n≥15 is citable as a market rate; n=5 is directional; n<5 is anecdotal. Austin’s $202K median looks high until you notice it comes from three postings spanning $113K to $254K. Los Angeles is one data point.
San Francisco vs. everyone: is the premium real?
The San Francisco premium appears real but its size is uncertain. FDE Pulse puts SF at the top of its metro list at $210K median (n=15). Recruiting from Scratch reports SF at $192K, above its own $180K remote median. These are two different measurements from two sources, so the $18K gap between them should not be read as a dispute to resolve. Only FDE Pulse ranks metros; no fetched source ranks SF against other cities beyond that. The defensible reading is that SF sits at the high end of the data, somewhere between roughly $192K and $210K at the median.
Remote vs. on-site: the location question that matters more
FDE Pulse reports remote roles at a $175K median (n=50) versus $186K on-site (n=109), about 6% lower. In dollar terms, that is roughly $11K in base salary at the median. Recruiting from Scratch reports a separate SF-only comparison ($192K in SF versus $180K remote) and does not compare all on-site roles, so it is not a second measure of the same gap.
Neither source explains why the gap exists. It may reflect employer mix, seniority mix, or deliberate remote pay bands. If you want remote work, plan for a lower base and weigh that against what you save on living costs. Our 2026 tech work-life balance guide covers the broader tradeoffs of remote arrangements.
Pay by seniority: the bands you should actually negotiate from
Seniority, not city, is the practical anchor for negotiation. FDE Jobs publishes base bands by level, with total comp in a separate column: entry $110K–$150K, mid $150K–$200K, senior $180K–$250K, and staff/lead $220K–$300K.
| Level | Base range | Typical total comp |
|---|---|---|
| Entry | $110K–$150K | $130K–$200K |
| Mid (2–5 yrs) | $150K–$200K | $180K–$300K |
| Senior | $180K–$250K | $250K–$420K |
| Staff/Lead | $220K–$300K | $320K–$550K+ |
Source: FDE Jobs, live-posting data. FDE Pulse’s title-derived medians show a similar curve: junior $110K (n=16), mid $160K (n=685), manager/lead $196K (n=140), and senior-plus $201K (n=205). Its seniority tiers come from job titles, and 81 of its 159 disclosed postings do not label a tier, so treat them as directional.
Pay by company tier: where the real money spreads
Company tier moves total compensation more than city does. According to the FDE Engineers 2026 salary guide, frontier labs pay an estimated $385K–$510K total comp at mid level and $560K–$785K at senior, applied-AI startups pay an estimated $250K–$340K at mid, and Fortune 500 enterprise AI teams pay an estimated $190K–$240K at mid.
These are estimates from a secondary summary of the Perspective AI 2026 FDE Compensation Report, which drew on roughly 1,200 data points. We did not fetch the underlying report, so treat these as estimated ranges, not posted bands. The structural point holds: equity makes up 60–70% of total comp at frontier labs versus 15–25% at Fortune 500 enterprise AI teams. Bonus runs roughly 15–25% of base, with frontier labs clustering around 20%. Two FDE roles with identical base salaries can differ by hundreds of thousands of dollars in total comp depending on employer type.
What employers actually pay: company-level estimates
Company-level figures are estimated total compensation, not posted base salaries, and should never be mixed with the base medians above. Per FDE Jobs, estimated TC runs $171K–$415K for Palantir FDSE, $280K–$550K for OpenAI FDE, $280K–$450K for Anthropic, $200K–$400K for Databricks and Google Cloud, and $180K–$350K for Salesforce, Scale AI, Rippling, and Ramp. These compile public postings, H-1B data, and levels-style data, so they carry real uncertainty.
The FDE Engineers guide gives mid-level base figures: OpenAI around $230K, Anthropic around $220K, Cohere $180K–$210K, Scale AI $170K–$200K, JPMorgan AI $170K–$210K, Big-4 consulting $160K–$195K, and Palantir FDSE $145K–$175K. Palantir’s pattern is modest base with 40–55% of TC in equity, which is why its estimated TC runs well above its base bands.
How to read these numbers when you negotiate
Negotiate from level bands and company tier, not city medians. Anchor base on the published level bands, benchmark total comp against your target employer’s tier, and cite a city median only if it is citable (New York at n=51, or SF at n=15 with the caveat).
- Anchor base on the level bands. If you are senior, the $180K–$250K base band sits around the $201K senior-plus median from FDE Pulse. Bring both to the conversation and say which source you are using.
- Benchmark TC by tier, not title. A $200K base at a Fortune 500 enterprise AI team and a $200K base at a frontier lab are very different offers once equity share (15–25% vs. 60–70% of TC) is factored in.
- Use city data only where it is real. New York ($195K, n=51) is the strongest city median in the data. Do not quote Austin or LA figures as market rates.
- Separate base from total comp in every conversation. Ask explicitly which one a quoted number represents, and rebuild the comparison yourself. Our negotiation playbook covers the mechanics in depth.
Caveats: read this before you quote any figure
Every number here carries a limitation: small samples, base-versus-total-comp mixing, vendor-sourced data, no cost-of-living adjustment, US-only scope, and no year-over-year baseline.
- Base vs. total comp. FDE Pulse and Recruiting from Scratch report base only. FDE Jobs gives base bands and TC in separate columns, and its company figures and FDE Engineers’ tier figures are estimated TC. Never mix them in one comparison.
- Sample sizes. Only 15% of FDE Pulse’s 1,046 active postings disclose pay. Only New York (n=51) is a reliable market-rate sample; San Francisco (n=15) is a weaker second. Austin (n=3) and LA (n=1) are anecdotal.
- Vendor-sourced data. Recruiting from Scratch is a recruiting firm with a contingency-fee interest in the hiring market. Label its figures accordingly.
- No cost-of-living adjustment. None of the fetched sources provides COL-adjusted FDE pay by city. All city medians here are nominal.
- Secondary sourcing. The tier TC ranges come from the FDE Engineers summary of the Perspective AI 2026 report, which we did not fetch directly.
- No year-over-year trend. No 2025 baseline was fetched, so we cannot say whether FDE pay rose or fell.
- US-only. We have no data on FDE pay in Europe, Canada, or other non-US metros.
FAQ
Which city pays FDEs the most in 2026?
San Francisco shows the highest median base in FDE Pulse’s data at $210K, but that rests on 15 postings, and Recruiting from Scratch reports SF at $192K. New York, at $195K median across 51 postings, is the most reliable high-paying market in the available data.
Do remote FDE roles pay less?
Yes, at the median. FDE Pulse reports remote roles at $175K versus $186K on-site, about 6% lower across 50 remote and 109 on-site postings. That works out to roughly $11K less in base salary. Neither source explains the gap.
Is a $200K+ base realistic for a senior FDE?
Often, but not by default. The senior band runs $180K–$250K base with $250K–$420K total comp (FDE Jobs), and FDE Pulse’s senior-plus median is $201K. Frontier-lab mid-level base already reaches $220K–$230K (Anthropic and OpenAI, per FDE Engineers), so a $200K senior offer is at the midpoint of the band, not the top.
The Bottom Line
City is the weakest variable in FDE pay. The only citable city sample is New York at $195K median, with San Francisco at $210K a plausible but thinly sourced leader; everything else rests on five or fewer postings. Seniority and employer tier decide most of the spread: an estimated $560K–$785K total comp at a frontier lab at senior level versus $240K–$310K at a Fortune 500 enterprise AI team. Negotiate from the level bands, benchmark TC against your target’s tier, and use the remote gap (about 6% in FDE Pulse’s data) as the location trade-off to weigh.
